Thanks to Libraries, a Reviewer, Readers

Here’s to all readers who engaged in discussions at recent library book talks and taught me much! From a report of Westby cave items now housed at the Smithsonian to a tour of haunted subterranean spaces at Bong State Recreation Area, I have plenty of leads to follow up on new Wisconsin Underground sites.

Thanks, too, to Joel Patenaude for his review of Elsie’s Story in Madison Magazine. The books may be published, but the discussions and explorations continue…

Cave Interest High in Vernon County

Summer in Wisconsin brings many welcome returns–like the Luna moth attached to our kitchen window screen, the groundhog kits playing under the lower deck, and connections with people intrigued by the state’s underground sites. I’ll be talking about caves, mines, and tunnels with folks in Vernon County, beginning June 4:

I’ll be meeting more folks interested in Wisconsin’s subterranean attractions on Friday, June 7, at The Village Booksmith in Baraboo. Finally, here’s a photo from a recent evening talk in the children’s room at the DeForest Area Public Library:

To Learn and To Share, Part 2

First, thanks to Carol Koby for an enjoyable conversation about all things underground in Wisconsin. The interview was broadcast on April 27 as part of her wonderful long-running program, All About Living, and will soon be available at

To Learn and to Share

One benefit of talking with folks about Wisconsin’s subterranean spaces is learning about spaces I wished I’d put in the book–like the cave containing a former tavern in the vicinity of Mirror Lake State Park or the tunnel in downtown Eau Claire.

And now I’ve read on a Minnesota caving page more about several sandstone spring caves on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. Each new lead is a new opportunity to explore and learn more about Badger State geology and history.

Hope to share what I learn at future book presentations and interviews, including an upcoming appearance on All About Living with Carol Koby radio show. Taping for the radio show is set for April 18, with the show broadcast on a Saturday morning, from 10 to 11 a.m., on HANK 1550 AM and 97.7 FM , as well as available as a podcast.

Rescheduled: ‘Wisconsin Underground’ on ‘Larry Meiller Show’

Larry Meiller will chat with me and radio listeners about my book, Wisconsin Underground: A Guide to Caves, Mines, and Tunnels In and Around the Badger State on Wednesday, March 27, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Originally scheduled for February 27, the show was preempted by the Congressional Cohen hearing that day.

I’m looking forward to hearing the questions and comments from people all around the state. And looking forward to learning about new underground sites and issues!
